Past Simple or Present Perfect? One of the trickiest parts of the English grammar for many learners.
All because in many other languages, including Russian, there's only one way to form the past tense of the verb whereas in English, there're five 🤯 Additionally, there're structures like 'used to' and 'would' that are also used for the past events. So, no wonder it can get a bit confusing!
With Past Simple and Present Perfect in particular, there's no hard and fast rule, so the only way to success is to have lots of practice! 👌🏻
✏ Use Past Simple when the period of time is well and truly finished 🔹️ I was in NY in September last year.
✏ Use Present Perfect when the period of time is unfinished 🔹️ I've been to NY this year.
✏ Use Present Perfect if the result of the action that happened in the past is relevant in the present moment 🔹️ I've already been to NY, so I'd like to visit Europe next time.
Of course, there's more to it 😉 but take it one step at a time, give yourself lots of practice and you'll see the results in no time! ✅
